Skin and Bones

The 20-minute film examines ways in which our economic class determines what is on our plates, as well as issues of animal and human rights. Dylan (24) escapes his struggling household at night to break into factory farms, destroy cages, and free chickens. But his radical animal liberationist views are coming more and more into conflict with a reality where so often, being a vegetarian means being wealthy and privileged, and being poor means doing anything to get by. As he struggles to help his mother raise his 14-year-old brother, the balance between Dylan’s ethical, economic, and familial responsibilities begins to fall apart. As he mentally, and physically, confronts his enemies, his worldview comes up against the very fiber of American life. In order to help raise his brother in a hungry household, Dylan must begin a search for solutions to his problems.

NPR Does Veganism

I’m always a little off-put by media representations of veganism/vegetarianism by non-vegans.  It seems surreal and theatrical and over the top (“not even honey!!”).

But I guess that’s why I’m making this movie.

LOOKING BACK: 1986 Farm Sanctuary rescues first animal and names her Hilda. Lifted from a downer dead pile at a stockyard, this inspiring sheep spent 11 years in our care and touched the hearts & minds of countless people during her life. All that we do now is because of Hilda and animals like her.
